- This collection is very prominent with texts by Sergius Bulgakov. All but 3 were written by him. Bulgakov was condemned by the Russian Orthodox Church as a heretic for the heresy of sophianism (uniting together of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary into a single deity or hypostasis of God). Therefore, I cannot recommend this set, especially for those unfamiliar with Eastern Orthodoxy.
- He was NOT condemned as a heretic. The matter was never settled.
- Rhonda, Terry is correct in saying he was not condemned a heretic. There are numerous papers suggesting the political situation in Russia at the time was a problematic force in even considering the question of heresy in the first place. Bulgakov's sophiology is not, as you charge, a 'uniting together of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary into a single deity or hypostasis of God.' While that may be a heresy, there is no way you could read Bulgakov and possibly charge him with that. Fr. Sergius Bulgakov's theology is the single most creative work of theology in the 20th Century (comparable even thinkers such as St. Maximus) and everyone, Orthodox or not, should encounter his work.
- I have this series in print...I seldom use it. There's better out there & I already have everything in it via other resources.
- What would you recommend as better resources?
- I have them in print, too.. BUT... having them on Logos/Verbum will make them truly the resources they were meant to be. Can't wait!
