- I can't wait to have access to these volumes. I can't believe that Logos is actually putting them out. If all the links work, this will be a fantastic resource for those of us interested in historical theology.
- They are out. I know the website says Jan 12 for the release date but I have mine already. It is fantastic!
- I think this is a “Reader’s Edition” rather than a “Research Edition.” Or maybe it is slowly becoming a research edition? Anyone familiar with Pelikan’s historical theology knows how daunting his citations are. Rather than massive and copious footnotes or endnotes, citations of primary sources are so numerous that they are placed in the margins all the way throughout almost like a separate running column. Further, they use an extremely intricate system of abbreviation that can be a bit confusing to follow if you aren’t already familiar with the primary sources themselves. Even more complex, they aren’t numbered, using instead in-line asterisks. All this was necessary given the amazingly heavy citation of primary sources by Pelikan. The amazing functionality of a Logos Research edition is that each of these marginal notes would appear as a hyperlink. Clicking the link would ideally at a minimum spell out in full what is being abbreviated. Ideally it would also function as a hyperlink to the source itself. Sadly, in my experience the majority of the asterisks don’t work. They seem to work more often in the earlier volumes than the later ones. There is often at least a hyperlink in these. In the later volume (the last especially) there seems to almost never be a hyperlink, which means that if you want to look up any reference you have to go find the abbreviation code to know what source is being cited (unless you know them all by heart). Perhaps this is a quirk of my own download, but I doubt it. Scripture references of course work perfectly throughout. This is not to downplay the value of the work. This price is a steal for these volumes, even if they offered nothing but bare text. However, their functionality could be vastly improved, and I hope Logos works to better the tagging in updates to the resource.
- It would be nice to be able to see some of the illustrations in the Preview to know whether this would be a helpful volume or not.
- The illustrations are extremely basic - pretty much just icons in a graph-like presentation. There is a single illustration for each book and then a brief book summary. If the illustrations are the only thing that sets this book apart from other outlines of the books of the Bible, I would not consider this to be a tremendous help. I may also have the bar set too high, having followed the illustrations from the Bible Project for years. Their graphics are out of sight!
- How does this differ from https://verbum.com/product/4246/summa-theologica-english-and-latin-bundle? How extensive is the updated and corrected translation?
- Great resource. My one big problem is that the hyperlinks to the rest of your library are pretty weak. The BAGD links don't work even though I own the BAGD/HALOT set. The links to the commentaries and Bible translations only give the bibliographic info. A much better version would have had each link open up the linked resource directly to the the place under discussion.
