• So far so good. Normally wouldn't review this early (only in chapter 4), but I have encountered an issue where Appendix C in the Logos addition does not actually give the Old Babylonian script, it's just the same Neo-Assyrian script given a second time. This makes it rather difficult to do the homework in chapter 3 which was based on the Old Babylonian script. Just putting this here in the hopes that it can get fixed! Otherwise a very good introduction.
    1. I have reported this issue to our team for further investigation. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
  • I'm not anti-paraphrase, but I feel like this has too many red flags to be even considered a fair paraphrase. Just hearing some of the back story to the translation from Brian Simmons perspective is enough to make me feel compelled to warn people to steer clear. From translation philosophy to actual translation practices it is so interpretative that it leaves very little of the inspired message in tact. Not to mention that it seems that Brian claims that this is a divinely inspired translation... if you want a paraphrase just stick to the Message.
    1. I had this book for my theology classes in seminary and it was pretty ok. Was not a fan of his writing style which seemed overly repetitive, but the content was challenging in a good way. There was some pretty major things I disagreed with, but it was worth reading for sure. Definitely worth referencing!
      1. This book is a great, quick introduction to some of some of the best scholarship on the Pentateuch. This is a book I'll be recommending to anyone getting into Pentateuch studies. It's a good starting point to be sure!
        1. Had to read and review this book for my OT class at seminary and this is definitely a book I'll be keeping and rereading. The key concepts of the book were very convincing and very helpful for approaching the Pentateuch. Some of the examples he gives definitely seem stronger than others, but there's no denying that Dr. Chen researched this topic thoroughly and knows his stuff. Highly recommend!
          1. Had to read this in my Theology II class at SEBTS and it was by far one of the best books from the entire semester, which is saying something. Union with Christ is such an important theological truth that has real impact on every area of the believer's life. Changed how I few myself, other believers, and lost people in relation to God. Can't recommend enough!
            1. Thks for this review! I have it assigned for my SYSTH 3 Class at SWBTS.
            2. I own it unread. I will now put it in my 2022 pile. Thanks for the review, Trent.
          2. I don't have the Logos version, but I read the paperback for class at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. This book was an easy read in that it seems to be written for anyone who wants to get a little bit of a deeper look into the Apostle Paul's life. It really help me get a good grasp on Paul's life and has made further study of the Pauline books so much richer. Highly recommend it to anyone from layman to pastor. Excellent read.
            1. As someone who has recently taken the dive into the original biblical languages, I became very excited when I saw this title! The Church today needs to understand their past. We need to understand how we got the Scripture we have today and this documentary serves to encourage and build up the body of Christ. Christians can rely on their bibles and take joy in the rich history of the biblical tradition. Glad I bought it.
