- Dr. Garrett's Systematic Theology is a great resource but it is helpful to understand what he was doing in this work. Dr. Garrett was primarily a historical theologian. The strength of this Systematic is how it allows the reader to get a helpful overview of the major Christian doctrines as they are present in the Old Testament, the New Testament, the writings of the Fathers (patristics), in the medieval church, in the Reformation era, and in the modern era. In other words, one who is preaching or teaching or studying a particular doctrine can turn to this work to get a good sense of how the church has approached it over the years. At times it can be a bit frustrating that we do not hear more of Dr. Garrett's personal views, but that does not mean he is absent from the work. It is a unique Systematic and, again, if understood rightly, it is a very, very helpful work. The scope of issues and the balanced way that Dr. Garrett presents the various approaches to and understandings of these issues is very impressive. Highly recommended. This is a great price on a great work.
