Sometimes God answers the 'how long until' question with a chronological period of time, as He did with Jeremiah and Daniel. Other times, God answers with indicators or signs, as Jesus did with the question of the temple's destruction. It may be Spring on March 20th, but it is not really Spring until you see the first robin, first green grass, first dandelion, first loon, and swat the first mosquito! One of the signs the temple was going to come down was the proliferation of false christs.

Jesus had a lot to say by way of prophecy before His sacrificial death for our sins. He spoke not only of the temple's destruction, but also of the timing around His coming. Some people make mistakes in interpreting this chapter because they are applying it all to the temple's destruction. Other people make mistakes because they are applying it all to His Second Coming. We are seeking to not be ashamed of ourselves as workmen by first understanding that He was answering two separate questions.

George Washington said that nature shows God only blesses nations which honor His laws. We have a much greater authority for this in Romans 1. The Gospel shows our truly hopeless condition when we rebel against Our Creator and His good ways. We have to understand His judgment in order to comprehend the goodness of His grace that can be found in repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.

What is God's remedy for a world that is lying to you? He has provided you with His Word. He has also provided you with your own senses, and hopefully, also with a little common sense. Man is not free to reject God and be his own master. He will always serve the True God or be a miserable slave of sin. And the wages of sin is death. But God's gift is eternal life in Christ Jesus!
