Last week we worshipped with great joy and heard God's word from Galatians 4:8-20. Paul bares his heart to the Galatians again: after welcoming him in his illness, after living in the freedom of grace, how could they go back to slavery? Paul feels like he's in the pains of childbirth on their behalf, until Christ is formed in them by the work of the Holy Spirit.

Two weeks ago we saw God claim Abram as his child through the waters of baptism, an outward sign of the Spirit-filled reality of God's children. Because of that, Paul writes to the Galatians, we should live as freed people, not as slaves. Baptism and slavery are incompatible, both on the human and spiritual levels. That's why Paul calls them to live in the freedom of the Spirit.
Last Sunday, we welcomed Rev. Dr. Donald Kinloch to preach on Phillipians 3:20-4:1 and Psalm 33. As citizens of God's kingdom first, and then of whatever nations we are part of, we are called to live as God's kingdom people. That is our ultimate allegiance.
