"And after sixty-two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for Himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease,..." (Daniel 9:26-27)
In Daniel's vision of seventy "weeks", Daniel was shown that Messiah would be "cut off" and that sometime after that event both Jerusalem and the temple would be destroyed. This destruction of the temple was also prophesied by Jesus in Matthew 24:1-2. The destruction of Jerusalem and the second temple was accomplished by the Romans in 70 A.D. From our passage in Daniel, we see that the evil prince of the seventieth "week" will stop the sacrifices; which means that, sometime between the destruction of the second temple in 70 A.D. and the middle of the seventieth "week", a new third temple will have been built so that sacrifices could have been offered... and then stopped.
As you read this, there are already plans drawn up and temple articles being made for a third temple to replace the one that was destroyed in 70 A.D. And, as we see from today's scripture, God Himself has plans for a Millennium temple that will be built by none other than Messiah Himself.
The Lord Gives Ezekiel the Dimensions of a New Temple
Ezekiel chapters 40-46
"In the five and twentieth year of our captivity, in the beginning of the year, in the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after that the city was smitten, in the selfsame day the hand of the LORD was upon me, and brought me there. In the visions of God brought He me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain, by which was as the frame of a city on the south. And He brought me there, and, behold, there was a man, whose appearance was like the appearance of brass, with a line of flax in his hand, and a measuring reed; and he stood in the gate. And the man said unto me, Son of man, behold with your eyes, and hear with your ears, and set your heart upon all that I shall show you; for the intent that I might show them to you are you brought here:declare all that you see to the house of Israel. (Ezekiel 40:1-4)
Ezekiel was writing from Babylon, where Judah had been taken into captivity. The Babylonians had destroyed the first temple; and, the Lord gave Ezekiel a vision of a future temple to encourage them.
"Afterward he brought me to the temple, and measured the posts, six cubits broad on the one side, and six cubits broad on the other side, which was the breath of the tabernacle. And the breath of the door was ten cubits; and the sides of the door were five cubits on the one side, and five cubits on the other side: and he measured the length thereof, forty cubits, and the breadth, twenty cubits. Then went he inward, and measured the post of the door, two cubits; and the door, six cubits; and the breadth of the door, seven cubits, So he measured the length thereof, twenty cubits; and the breath, twenty cubits, before the temple: and he said to me, This is the most holy place." (Ezekiel 41:1-4)
"And the glory of the LORD came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east. So the Spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of the LORD filled the house. And I heard Him speaking to me out of the house; and the man stood by me. And He said to me, son of man, the place of My throne, and the place of the soles of My feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel for ever, and my holy name, shall the house of Israel no more defile..." (Ezekiel 43:4-7)
It would be a marvelous temple: where the Lord would "dwell in the midst of the children of Israel for ever." This cannot be referring to the second temple during Jesus' life, as it, like the first temple, was destroyed. So, it must be referring to a temple that would be built sometime in the future.
The BRANCH Will Build the Temple and Sit on the Throne
"And speak unto him, saying, Thus says the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the Man whose name is The BRANCH; and He shall grow up out of His place, and He shall build the temple of the LORD:
Even He shall build the temple of the LORD; and He shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon His throne; and He shall be a priest upon His throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both." (Zechariah 6:12-13)
Messiah Jesus was also referred to as the BRANCH in Isaiah 11:1-5, Jeremiah 23:5, and Jeremiah 33:15-16. As Messiah, we know that He will be the one that sits on the throne in the Millennial Kingdom; and, from the book of Hebrews, we know that Jesus is "a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek". (Hebrews 7:21) Jesus therefore fulfills the requirements of this priestly king; and, since He has not built any temple yet, this must happen after His glorious second coming as King of King and Lord of Lords.
Those who have accepted Jesus as their Savior will be there to see these amazing events. The chaos of the moment is but a grain of sand in the hourglass of eternity.
