Joel 2:25–26 (AV) — 25 And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten...which I sent among you. ...Ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed.
Why cry over spilt milk? What’s the use? You can’t gather it up. When the thing’s done, why sit down and cry? Cry before your milk is spilt, if crying will do any good. But why cry even then if you have nothing to sell? --C. H. Spurgeon.
Wasted years, the grieving of a conscience pained over past regret. No doubt, this weapon is a powerful tool in the hand of our invisible foe who oft reminds us of our failures. For some of us, memory lane is full of potholes. The more we drive through it, the more it rattles our teeth. Some of us even get flat tires, stranded in a dark alley on the corner of Pain and Heartache.
What should you do if you find yourself there? Take inventory. Have you learned what not to do? Have you corrected that behavior or attitude that led to those poor decisions? Have you confessed that sin to God and made things right on your end to be reconciled if an offended party was involved? If so, take heart. The promise is sure,
1 John 1:9 (AV) — 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Stop loafing around and get out the spare tire called, “The Blood of Christ that cleanseth from all sin” and get the tire iron of faith in the promise and leave memory lane behind!
God promises restoration, “I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten.” He also guarantees fulfillment and satisfaction in the years ahead, “Ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied.” Furthermore, God declares that we will “praise the name of the LORD,” for the way He “hath dealt wondrously” with us.
M. R. DeHaan said,
Don’t look back and cry over spilt milk. Don’t interpret any experience in terms of today, but translate all of them into terms of eternity.
