If we “rightly divide” (2 Timothy 2:15), we won’t get confused by verses like this. Since John 3:36 contradicts Ephesians 2:8,9 where the apostle Paul states salvation is “not of yourselves...it is the gift of God...not of works" the solution to the problem is to rightly divide these passages. Understand that the gospel of John was written to the Jews under the law, which required obedience to enter the Kingdom. We live in the dispensation of grace which was not revealed until the apostle Paul was give the revelation of the mystery (Ephesians 3:3). We can’t have it both ways; we can’t say we will not see God and experience his wrath if we disobey, and then say we are saved by grace through faith. They are mutually exclusive. Rightly divide and the problem is solved.
