Should Women Be Included In The Draft?

TLDR: In 1 Enoch and Genesis 6:1-4 we are told that the fallen sons of God came and taught men metallurgy, not so humanity might create plowshares to increase the production of food, but rather that humanity could craft weapons of war to steal, kill, and destroy one another. Scripture tells us that there shall be no end to the increase of Christ's rule over the earth (Isaiah 9:7). Furthermore, we as Christians should also look forward to a time in which nations shall no longer go to war nor learn war anymore (Isaiah 2:4). Therefore, as Christians, we should be opposed to anything that increases the likelihood of going to war. We should be opposed to women being included in the draft because we should also be opposed to the military conscription of men!

Isaiah 2:4, "He shall judge between the nations, and shall decide disputes for many peoples; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore."

It is often a mischaracterization that Yahweh is a God of war. A closer examination of the Biblical text shows that Yahweh is hesitant to go to war and makes many exceptions (where the Christian View of Just War is then derived due to these hesitancies and prohibitions).

As Leviathan* grows, it seeks more of its followers to devour (Job 3:8; Jonah 1:17). By and large, our rulers in the US do not send their own sons and daughters to war. All the while, Congress continues to abdicate the responsibility of declaring war to the whims of the ruler sitting in the Oval Office that chooses to send our fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, and brothers and sisters to war (the Constitution, although not perfect, is in part based on the Christian notion of limiting the power of Leviathan with our three branches of government).

The mistake we make as Christians is to ask whether Leviathan is on the side of the Republicans or the Democrats as it continues to grow to require more sacrifices (Job 41:1, 12-15). The sons of disobedience, elsewhere called the powers and principalities are the ones who gravitate towards thrones and often are the spiritual entities that lead rulers into sin and enslave their will to be used as pawns in their rebellion towards God (Ephesians 5:6, 6:12; Isaiah 14:1-21; Ezekiel 28:1-19; 1 Chronicles 21:1).

As Christians, we would do well to hold our rulers accountable before the King and remind them that they are not the highest authority and need to submit to his rule over them (Matthew 28:18; Psalm 2:6-12). We would do well as Christians to renew our minds and base our thoughts on the Law of God (Romans 12:1-2).

Military Draft

The idea of whether or not women should be eligible for the draft has long been debated and continues to pop up. As our culture continues its path of revering Leviathan and procuring its worship under the banner of “equality” for all, the question raised is if women can serve and are equal to men then why shouldn’t they be included in the draft?

The question we should ask is should we give Leviathan the authority to conscript our fathers, brothers, and sons into war in the first place? The Bible answers this with a loud resounding “NO.” Therefore, our mothers, sisters, and daughters should also not be conscripted for war. As Christians, we should be opposed to military conscription!

Deuteronomy 20:5-8 states, ”The officers shall say to the people: ‘Has anyone built a house and not dedicated it? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else may dedicate it. Has anyone planted a vineyard and not begun to enjoy it? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else may enjoy it. Has anyone become pledged to a woman and not married her? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else marry her.’ Then the officers shall add, ‘Is any man afraid or fainthearted? Let him go home so that his brothers will not become disheartened too.’”

Here we have four commands given to military officers to PREVENT voluntary military service.

Those who have a new house

Those who have a new vineyard

Those who have a fiancée

Those who are afraid

We see that the first three show that the private interest of the people is superior to the national and public interest. The Bible makes it explicitly clear that the enjoyment of these private domestic interests far exceeds the National interest. The fourth one completely destroys any notion of a draft. The first three are easily determined who has a new house, new vineyard, or a new fiancée but the fourth is largely only decided by the individual themselves. Therefore, these show that they are not exemptions from a draft, but outrightly prohibit a draft. The first three are given to the officers to command men who volunteer for war and the fourth is commanded to not melt the hearts and morale of their fellow brothers who will go into battle voluntarily. No ruler can rightly decide if a man has fear in his heart.

Now if we take into account that the wars in which Israel is being called into are Holy Wars that are related to the conquest of the Nephilim that remained after the account of Genesis 6:1-4, that they had settled in the Land, and this land was governed by the fallen sons of God of Deuteronomy 32:8-9/Genesis 10:1-11:9/Psalm 82:1-8 that set themselves up as the gods of the nations then we know that even these wars were unique and limited. Therefore, how much more important is it that the principle to base all wars, no matter the direness or prescribed importance of it means that it never trumps the private domestic interests. This doesn’t eliminate those that might wish to encourage others to go to war as they may feel it is the only way in which to protect the enjoyment of these private interests. But it never gives power to the rulers of the land to force anyone to go to war.

Furthermore, God prohibits his people from having a standing army to further limit the power of the rulers and puts a hedge of protection around them from the temptations of the powers and principalities to move entire people groups to do their bidding (Job 1:13-15, 17; Colossians 3:7-9; Ephesians 2:1-4).

Prohibition against a standing army

Deuteronomy 17:16-18 - Not to accumulate weapons of war nor make political alliances.

2 Samuel 21:1 - Not to number the troops because they do not belong to the earthly ruler.

It is my hope and prayer as Christians we begin to oppose such things on the merit of Scripture rather than on culture, tradition, or party affiliation. The sin of our nation to have conscripted men into war for National interests is no reason to also include women. Let us rightly oppose all conscription into the service of Leviathan!

*Leviathan in Scripture represents the dragon of chaos. It is often linked to the power of wayward rulers and governing forces such as Babylon. Leviathan is not meant to be understood as a literal creature nor even as just a metaphor for evil power, but it is used as a descriptive way to refer to the evil spirits, the fallen sons of God that lurk behind the tyrannical rule of sinful earthly kings and their kingdoms.
