2021 Martin Luther Servant of Christ Award Winners - Paul & Sheryl Dauksha
Congratulations to Paul and Sheryl Dauksha, this year's Martin Luther Servant of Christ Award winners!
Paul is 1 of 4 children, born to Bob and Lorraine on January 1, 1962 and baptized not long after. He has 1 brother – Mark, and 2 sisters – Roxanne and Celeste. His dad was in the Air Force so they traveled a lot during his childhood; he was born in Wisconsin, lived in Italy for a short time, moved to Arizona, and Chicago, eventually settling in South Elgin at around age 9. Paul grew up in the Catholic church where his mom was a Sunday school and catechism teacher. His dad was very involved in the Knights of Columbus and VFW right up until the day he passed.
Paul was a manager at Taco Bell where he met Sheryl, also a manager. They were married on June 25, 1988 and soon afterward he went back to school and got his degree in computer science from Northern Illinois University, where he now works as a programmer/Developer. Sheryl grew up Methodist and when discussing what church to go to they decided to meet in the middle and try the Lutheran church; and Immanuel has been their home ever since. They have been members for 23 years. Paul has 5 children, Rob, Scott, Jake, Matt, and Rebekah, ranging in age from 14 through 38. His parents built a cabin in Wisconsin in the 70's and he loves spending time with his kids there. He likes spending time outdoors landscaping, gardening, and building campfires. Paul volunteers to help with the middle school youth. He’s taught Sunday school, helped with confirmation classes, assisted with youth group, and chaperoned mission trips. He currently serves as worship assistant in the roles of greeter and usher, and was on the green team for several years. He helps with the annual garage sale and is a regular work day volunteer. He frequently serves in the kitchen; and him and his wife are present and willing helpers at most special events. Even though his son has aged out of boy scouts, he still serves as liaison for Immanuel’s boy scout troop 12. He’s an active volunteer with the troop and serves as a merit badge counselor. Paul loves being a part of our church community. He’s a regular at the relational and Saturday men’s Bible Studies and the Men’s Huddle; and has also helped with the Heart-to-heart program, assisting those in need with bringing property up to code. He’s a past member of the Spiritual Guidance Committee and currently serves as a member of the Mission and Ministry Council.
Sheryl was born on June 20, 1964 in Dekalb, Illinois to Ed and Vera. She was the baby, welcomed by older siblings Karen, Larry, Marilee, Mary Sue, and Holly. She was baptized at the same time she was confirmed into the Faith United Methodist Church in May of 1978. She was very involved in the youth group at her church.
Sheryl attended Genoa Elementary School, Genoa Middle School, and Genoa-Kingston High School before attending and graduating from Northern Illinois University. She met Paul when they were both managers at Taco Bell, and they were married on June 25, 1988--one of the hottest days of the year. They have welcomed four children, Scott, Jacob, Matthew, and Rebekah. Sheryl has taught preschool Sunday School for many years and loves watching Bible stories come alive for these little ones. She has volunteered for and supported student ministry, and served at several Buildings and Grounds work days. She helps with the annual garage sale and frequently serves in the kitchen. She and her husband are present and willing helpers at most special events. She also serves as a worship assistant in the roles of greeter and reader. Sheryl is a valued long-term member of Women's Bible Study, is a Bible study leader, serves on the team developing the Five Pillars, has completed several of the Relational track studies, and has served as a member of the Mission and Ministry Council.
