Athanasius of Alexandria: His Life and Impact (The Early Church Fathers)
Peter Barnes
From the foreword: Until his death in 373, Athanasius was the most formidable opponent of Arianism in the Roman Empire. Ultimately, for him, this fight was not a struggle for ecclesial power or even for the rightness of his theological position. It was a battle for the souls of men and women. Athanasius rightly knew that upon one’s view of Christ hung one’s eternal destiny. As he wrote to the bishops of Egypt in 356: “as therefore the struggle that is now set before us concerns all that we are, either to reject or to keep the faith, let us be zealous and resolve to guard what we have received, bearing in mind the confession that was written down at Nicaea.” And by God’s grace, his victory in that struggle has been of enormous blessing to the church ever since.

Knowing Where We Stand: The Message of John’s Epistles
Peter Barnes
"Assurance is not essential to salvation, but it is essential to the joy of salvation," as Martyn Lloyd-Jones once said. John, who was by this time probably the last surviving apostle, wrote his first epistle to those who believed in the name of the Son of God in order that they might know that they possessed eternal life. In these days of spiritual and moral decline we stand in particular need of the message of John's epistles. We need to test ourselves first to see where we stand before God and then, with charity of heart and clarity of mind, we need to test the claims of others, too. That is why John's epistles are so important for us. With good reason, Martin Luther wrote of 1 John, "I have never read a book written in simpler words than this one, and yet the words are inexpressible." In this commentary Peter Barnes shows how John gave his readers three main tests so that they could come to assurance of salvation and could tell, among...

A Study Commentary on Galatians
Peter Barnes
Of all Paul’s letters, the epistle to the Galatians is undoubtedly his most fiercely worded, more so even than the two Corinthian letters. The problem in the churches in Galatia was that they had heard the Gospel from the great apostle Paul, but then proceeded to modify it. A little poison in the cup may be all that is needed for the cup to be toxic.
