Nag Hammadi Texts and the Bible: A Synopsis and Index
Craig A. Evans; Robert L. Webb; Richard A. Wiebe
The Nag Hammadi Texts and the Bible places in synoptic form parallel texts from Nag Hammadi and from the Bible. This will enable scholars of Coptic Gnosticism, as well as scholars concerned with early Christian biblical interpretation, to make the comparisons necessary to determine relationships and what dependence, if any, there may be between these two bodies of material. This volume should facilitate the discussion concerning the origin, antiquity, and relationship of Gnosticism to Christianity.

John the Baptizer and Prophet: A Socio-Historical Study
Robert L. Webb
This volume, a revised version of a doctoral dissertation submitted to the University of Sheffield in 1990, places John the Baptist within his first-century Jewish context by exploring his public roles and activities as a baptizer and a prophet as they would have been understood within the sociohistorical context of Second Temple Judaism. After surveying the relevant traditions concerning John the Baptist (in particular, Josephus, canonical Gospels, and extracanonical sources), the volume turns to the use of ablutions and immersions in the Hebrew Bible, in Second Temple Jewish literature, and especially in the Qumran literature. In light of this context, several functions of John’s baptism are proposed both in continuity with his context and in distinction from it. Then, Webb explores John’s role as a prophet in two respects.

Peter H. Davids; Robert L. Webb
The letters of James, 1 and 2 Peter, and Jude are among the most neglected letters of the New Testament. Thus, methodological advances in New Testament study tend to arise among the Gospels or Pauline letters. But these letters are beginning to receive increased attention in the scholarly community. Reading Jude with New Eyes is the fourth of four volumes that incorporate research in this area. The essays collected here examine the impact of recent methodological developments in New Testament studies to Jude, including, for example, rhetorical, social-scientific, socio-rhetorical, ideological, and hermeneutical methods, as they contribute to understanding this letter and its social context. Each essay will have a similar three-fold structure: 1) a description of the methodological approach; 2) the application of the methodological approach to the particular letter under consideration (the bulk of the essay); and 3) a conclusion identifying how the methodological approach contribu...
