This is a complete presentation on the workings of the human spirit and soul and body. The book aims at delivering people from the tyranny of self life with its carnality and from the domination of the passions and lusts of the flesh. It attempts to lead them to the full salvation of Christ. It is not to be taken as a manual but as a guide to true spirituality. It is recommended that this three volume work be read quickly through once. Then, lay it aside and wait until the Holy Spirit leads one into a certain stage of spiritual life when knowledge and understanding are needed. Authority is a tremendous thing in the universe, nothing overshadows it. God’s throne is established on His authority. God’s authority represents God Himself. God alone is authority in all things; all the authorities of the earth are instituted by God. It is therefore important for us who desire to serve God to know the authority of God. God’s authority is absolute, hence we must give Him absolute submission ( our heart’s attitude ) and absolute obedience ( our outward actions ). But to His delegated authorities we can render absolute submission, but only relative obedience. For their authorities are circumscribed by the measure of the life of Christ in them. Only when they themselves submit to God’s authority in them are they able to represent God. Hence there is much we have to learn about how to represent God.

The apostle Paul ends his second letter to the Corinthians with the divine salutation, “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all” (13.14). We as Christians come to know the fullness of the Godhead through the love, the grace and the communion, which proceed from the triune God. It is the love of God the Father that purposes all. It is the grace of God the Son that provides all. And it is the communion of God the Spirit that performs all. Love, grace and communion are all equally essential. What would love be without grace? It would have no expression. What would grace be without communion? It would be unattainable. This present volume is a compilation of messages given by God’s servant Watchman Nee at various times and places. They all relate to the communion of the Holy Spirit.

The Bible is the inspired word of God. Every child of His must know it by heart. The Bible records the many things God did for us in the past and the many words He spoke. It also registers the many ways by which He led people in former days. The speaking of God to us today is based upon the words He has already spoken; His speaking through us today is also built upon what He has once before uttered. Hence we need to store the word of God richly in our heart before we can hear God’s speaking today and before we can be used as ministers of His word. The aim in our compiling this volume is to supply some prerequisites and principal methods of studying the Scriptures to those who have a heart to know the Bible. Does God work alone or does He work with man? Let us see that aside from the work of creation which He performs alone, God always works with man and works in man. If He does not obtain the man He looks for, He will not do the work He plans but will wait until He does obtain His man, and then His work shall be done. Such knowledge reveals the unspeakable love of God towards man, but it also places upon man a tremendous responsibility. Throughout the various chapters of this present volume, Watchman Nee. and his close associate Dr. C. H. Yu (in Chapter 2), present God’s need of man conclusively. Although it is God himself who indeed does the work, nevertheless He will not work without the cooperation of man. He will first work in man and then work through man.

Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve (Matt. 4.10). This is the principal duty of man. God alone is worthy to be worshipped. But this prerogative of God is fiercely contested in the universe. Satan tries to rob God of His worship, and man is tempted to worship anything other than God himself. The Lord Jesus came into this world to restore worship to God. He declared: “the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth: for such doth the Father seek to be his worshippers” (John 4.23). As the redeemed children of God, we now have the privilege of being true worshippers. It is therefore imperative for us to know what worship is and how we should worship. This missing jewel must be recovered in the Church.

God’s desire is to commune with man. God being spirit, the man who worships Him must worship in spirit and truth. It is therefore essential for man to be spiritual. This is what the gospel of Jesus Christ is all about. Salvation is the way to spirituality. The original three volume set of The Spiritual Man by Watchman Nee serves as a guide, not as a manual, to walk in spiritual life as well as to fight the spiritual warfare. It was written under tremendous spiritual conflict. Only through the grace of God and the victory of Christ was Watchman Nee able to finish the writing. Now having become a Christian classic, it may be considered as Watchman Nee’s legacy to the Church. Condensed in this new volume, there are 42 lessons to be learned in journeying towards the spiritual. May we be guided by the Spirit of God to heartily learn these necessary lessons all to the glory of God.

God has His work. And this work is not your work or mine, nor the work of this mission or that group. It is God’s own work. The church is called to be a co-worker with God. But can we labor with God if we are still ignorant of what His work is? Many today work for God, but who are working with God? This series of spoken ministry on the overall theme of the priesthood of all believers in Christ was delivered by Watchman Nee in Shanghai, China. They were spoken just prior to his convening on Mt. Kuling, situated near the port city of Foochow, of what became the first of two Training Conferences for brother Nee’s fellow workers, this one held during the late spring and summer of 1948.
