Knocking on Heaven’s Door: A New Testament Theology of Petitionary Prayer
David Crump
How are we to understand the nature of petitionary prayer? This is an issue of perennial concern to the church, from both a theological and a pastoral standpoint. Certainly much has been written on the topic from a devotional/experiential approach as well as from a philosophical one. But Knocking on Heaven’s Door by David Crump is the first attempt to examine exhaustively the New Testament writings that have a bearing on the topic. Two extreme views on petitionary prayer are often promulgated in the churches. The first states that God will grant any request as long as the petitioner has enough faith and/or persistence. The second acknowledges that sometimes God does not answer prayers and resignedly concludes that prayer is really for our sake and has no impact on God’s actions. Using careful exegesis, Crump first critiques these views and then examines all the relevant New Testament texts in order to construct a cohesive theology of prayer that is faithful to the teachings of J...

Encountering Jesus, Encountering Scripture: Reading the Bible Critically in Faith
David Crump
Personal, experiential faith is seldom given a seat at the table of academic theology and biblical studies. David Crump, however, with the assistance of Soren Kierkegaard’s religious philosophy, claims that “authentic understanding, and thus authentic Christian commitment, can only arise from the personal commitment that is faith.” Examining the various biblical, historical, cultural, theological, and academic hurdles which demand a Kierkegaardian leap of faith before one can meet the resurrected Jesus, Crump’s Encountering Jesus, Encountering Scripture provides an insightful discussion of key New Testament texts and issues, revealing how truth is discovered only through the subjectivity of faith.

Like Birds in a Cage: Christian Zionism’s Collusion in Israel’s Oppression of the Palestinian People
Gary M. Burge; David Crump
When Christians collude in crimes against humanity, they betray their citizenship in the kingdom of God, demonstrating that Christ's Lordship does not rule over every area of their lives. The popular ideology known as Christian Zionism is a prime enabler of such widespread discipleship--failure in western Christianity. As the state of Israel continues to violate international law with colonial settlement in lands captured by warfare, legalized racial discrimination, and the creation of what many have called "the world's largest open-air prison" in Gaza, Christian Zionists continue their unqualified support for Zionist Israel. Though Israel advertises itself as "the only democracy in the Middle East," it is actually a rigid ethnocracy--its entire society built on the foundations of Jewish supremacy over a Palestinian underclass. History will eventually judge Christian Zionist support for Israel's crimes against the Palestinians in the same way people of conscience now condemn the…
