The Book of the Acts (The New International Commentary on the New Testament | NICNT)
F. F. Bruce
First published in 1954, F. F. Bruce’s volume on the Book of Acts in the NICNT series has stood as a standard commentary on Acts. In keeping with the effort to be faithful to the description “new” in the series title, however, Bruce undertook a thorough revision of this commentary before his death in 1990. Expanded and fully updated, this volume now reflects the best elements of recent notable contributions to the study of Luke-Acts as well as the author’s own deepened understanding gained from years of further reflection on the text. Whereas the first edition used the text of the American Standard Version of 1901, this revision is based on Bruce’s own fresh translation of the Greek text. The result is a work that makes transparent the walls between the first and the twentieth centuries and enables readers to hear not only the voice of Luke but the Word of God.

The Epistle to the Hebrews, Revised (The New International Commentary on the New Testament | NICNT)
F. F. Bruce
For many readers the Epistle to the Hebrews is among the most difficult books of the New Testament. Understanding its message calls for a great familiarity with its Old Testament background and a good knowledge of certain phases of first-century biblical exegesis. When first published in 1964, this commentary on Hebrews by F. F. Bruce received critical praise for providing the expertise needed on both these fronts.

The Canon of Scripture
F. F. Bruce
Author F. F. Bruce presents a thorough reexamination of the historical evidence for acceptance of the canon, focusing on the central issues of criteria of canonicity, the idea of a canon within a canon, and canonical criticism. Adept in both Old and New Testament studies, Bruce brings a rare comprehensive perspective to his task, as well as the wisdom of a lifetime of reflection and biblical interpretation to bear in answering the questions and clearing away the confusion surrounding the Christian canon of Scripture. Winner of two 1990 Christianity Today Awards and a 1989 ECPA Gold Medallion Award, this impressive work remains a significant landmark and touchstone for further studies.

The Epistle to the Galatians (The New International Greek Testament Commentary | NIGTC)
F. F. Bruce
Paul's letter to the churches of Galatia was for many years a document of special interest and study for renowned New Testament scholar F. F. Bruce. This excellent volume in the New International Greek Testament Commentary series contains Bruce's mature work on that important early epistle. Through phrase-by-phrase exegesis of the Greek text, consistent awareness of the historical and geographical context, and balanced dialogue with scores of other scholars, Bruce successfully bridges the hermeneutical gap and makes the text of Galatians come alive for both scholars and students. Based on careful historical-critical-linguistic exegesis yet primarily theological in character, this commentary places special emphasis throughout on Paul's insistence on justification before God by faith apart from works of the law, and on Paul's presentation of the Spirit as the principle of the new life in Christ.

Peter, Stephen, James, and John: Studies in Non-Pauline Diversity in the Early Church
F. F. Bruce
It is plain from Paul’s writings that presentations of the Christian message other than his own were current during his apostolic career. This concise and scholarly study describes four of the non-Pauline movements in the early church, each of which can be identified with a particular leader: Peter, acknowledged leader of the apostles; Stephen and the Hellenists (Jews who spoke Greek culturally and linguistically); James and the Church of Jerusalem; and John and his circle, including his influen...

Paul: Apostle of the Free Spirit
F. F. Bruce
F. F. Bruce’s classic meditation on the life and theology of Paul. Here, Bruce expounds on Paul’s teaching not systematically but rather by treating its main themes in their historical context, as Paul himself had occasion to develop them in his lectures. Paul’s missionary activity is portrayed against the background of historical, social and political developments in the Roman Empire of the first century, and Paul’s letters are studied within the context of his life and travels.

New Testament History
F. F. Bruce
The story of the New Testament is best understood when it is set in its historical context, which is what F.F. Bruce does brilliantly in this book. He begins by explaining the political, social, intellectual, and religious aspects of the Jewish people after their return from exile. The life and ministry of Jesus is then set within that culture. After the crucifixion of Jesus, “none of the authorities . . . could have reckoned with the event that confounded all their calculations,” says Bruce—“Jesus’ rising from the dead and appearing to his disciples. . . . It took [his followers] quite by surprise. But it transformed them from a crowd of demoralized and frightened people into a band of men with a mission and purpose which, without delay, they proceeded to translate into action.” The second half of New Testament History is given to the actions of the followers of Jesus—the story of the early church, and the expansion of Christianity throughout the Roman Empire. Bruce’s details...

What is the relationship between law and grace? What is God's ultimate purpose for Israel? Without losing sight of the simplicity of the gospel, F. F. Bruce guides us along the difficult but rewarding paths of this great letter.

Israel and the Nations: The History of Israel from the Exodus to the Fall of the Second Temple, rev. ed.
F. F. Bruce
In recounting Israel’s story from the Exodus to the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans, F.F. Bruce reveals the historical context of the nation of Israel in a way that reads more like a novel than an academic text. In doing so, he makes the Bible come alive. For instance, the book gives a context to Psalm 137 in which Edom rejoices over Jerusalem’s fall to Babylon, and it gives context to John 4 where a woman says, “Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.” The chief distinction of Israel and the Nations lies in the fact that Professor Bruce does not deal with Israel as an isolated unit. Rather, he deals with Israel from the standpoint of its historical interaction with its almost forgotten neighbors. The Old Testament is the story of Israel, God’s chosen people. At the time the Bible was written, the story’s context—Israel’s relation with Egypt, with the nations of Canaan, and with Babylon and Assyria, for instance—was familiar to its readers. However, today’s...

Understanding Biblical Criticism
F. F. Bruce
The term “biblical criticism” simply means discerning the most accurate text of the Bible (“textual criticism”) and then exploring issues such as who wrote the various books of the Bible, when they were written, and the circumstances of the writing (“higher criticism”). Yet because the word “criticism” can imply fault-finding and because some prominent biblical critics come to their study with a skepticism of the historical value of the Bible, biblical criticism often stirs up suspicion or even ...
