Gerhard’s Sacred Meditations
Johann Gerhard
Born in 1582, by his mid-thirties Johann Gerhard was regarded as Germany’s greatest living Protestant theologian. He established the tradition of Lutheran scholasticism and wrote some of the period’s most popular and influential devotional literature. He wrote these Sacred Meditations when he was only 22. In his introduction, Charles Albert remarks that Sacred Meditations, “. . . gained and maintained a deep and lasting hold upon the Church, as so expressing the loftiest devotion, with spiritual insight so just, that all, even those old in the faith, might be guided and uplifted by the meditations of so young a disciple of Christ.” This devotional book contains 51 meditations from the prominent Luther theologian.

Handbook of Consolations: For the Fears and Trials That Oppress Us in the Struggle with Death
Johann Gerhard; Carl L. Beckwith
Johann Gerhard (1582-1637) was one of the leading dogmatic theologians of his time and was the authoritative voice of seventeenth-century Lutheran Orthodoxy. Yet, he also published numerous devotional works and meditations that were meant to be used in the daily lives of ordinary believers. The Handbook of Consolations sought to provide comfort and encouragement not only to those approaching death, but also to those who provided care for the sick and dying. Gerhard himself was no stranger to sickness and death, having lost his infant son and young wife, and faced numerous life-threatening illnesses throughout his life. In this pastoral work, which is the first complete English translation based on Gerhard's original Latin to be published since the seventeenth century, Gerhard brings together his extensive understanding of Scripture, theology, and church history in a practical and easy-to-understand manual that is as relevant and meaningful in the twenty-first century as it was in…

On the Nature of God and on the Most Holy Mystery of the Trinity (Theological Commonplaces)
Johann Gerhard
On the Nature of God and on the Trinity addresses God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as Gerhard explores the divine names, the natural knowledge of God, the divine essence, and the mystery of the Trinity. On Justification through Faith, vol. XIX of Theological Commonplaces
Johann Gerhard
Originally published in 1613, On Justification through Faith presents Johann Gerhard’s classic voice on this crucial doctrine. While his theology is, in many respects, nothing new beyond what other Lutherans such as Martin Chemnitz said before him, his perspective is distinctively helpful to modern readers, especially in his dealing of topics not dealt with by previous theologians.

On the Resurrection of the Dead and On the Last Judgment, vols. XXX-XXXI of Theological Commonplaces
Johann Gerhard
The Gospels teach Christians to “Watch, stay awake and pray, for you do not know when the time is.” The question is who is to stay awake? If it’s Christians, why are they do stay awake? This Theological Commonplace looks at Gerhard’s stance in answering these questions, digging deep into the resurrection and Christ’s second coming. This edition focuses specifically on the onthamology, four truths of the resurrections, the proofs of judgment, and much more.

On the Person and Office of Christ
Johann Gerhard
The central figure of the Christian faith is Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. In this volume, Gerhard addresses the etymology of Christ’s name, the divine and human natures of Christ, the personal union and communication of the two natures, the communication of attributes, and the office (or work) of Christ. In many ways this volume is even more thorough and complete than Chemnitz’s master work The Two Natures in Christ.

On Eternal Life (Theological Commonplaces)
Johann Gerhard
This volume contains the commonplace On Eternal Life, originally published in 1622 in the ninth volume of Johann Gerhard’s Theological Commonplaces. On December 3, 1610, Gerhard held a disputation on the “four last things of man” these include death, resurrection, judgment, and then either hell or heaven. 1 Pet. 1:9 says that “the end of our faith” is “the salvation of our souls.” The translation of this verse has three different meanings that change the view of faith when Christians encounter mysteries not revealed in this lifetime. Each and every one of these meanings has its place in the apostolic text for a distinct reason. Gerhard makes a systematic attempt to answer these questions biblically and give advice on using this theology.

On Good Works, vol. XX of Theological Commonplaces
Johann Gerhard
In this commonplace On Good Works, Johann Gerhard explores the proper place of good works in the life of a Christian, emphasizing that good works do not make a Christian righteous and saved, but they show that the person has become righteous and saved. Gerhard’s most significant interaction is with the Roman Catholic combination of God’s grace and human merit as contributing to salvation. His primary Catholic opponent, Robert Bellarmine, as well as the Council of Trent, sought to emphasize grace while still defending the idea that eternal life is given as wages owed to human good works. Although good works are necessary for many reasons (with respect to God, our neighbor, and ourselves), they are not necessary for salvation. Only Christ’s merit imputed to believers saves. Christians can and do perform good works, though these are imperfect and do not merit salvation.

On the Church (Theological Commonplaces)
Johann Gerhard
The doctrine of the church was contentious as Lutherans argued for the scriptural catholicity of their churches, which embraced the Reformation, over against Roman Catholic claims to be the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church confessed in the creeds. Distinguishing between visibility and invisibility as aspects of the same church, Gerhard discusses whether the church can err and defines the true marks of the church. Yet this volume covers much more than just the doctrine of the church. It ...

Next, Gerhard demonstrates from Scripture the necessity of a specific call to the ministr...
