G. W. F. Hegel

Anyone who does theology in the twenty-first century should have some understanding of the German philosopher G. W. F. Hegel, whose writings deeply influenced European thought on both the left and right. In this introduction to Hegel, Shao Kai (“Alex”) Tseng examines the events in Hegel’s life that shaped his work, shows the theological significance of his philosophy, and surveys the use of Hegelian methods in modern theology. Finally, he provides a fresh and insightful Reformed critique, underscoring the importance of an objective commitment to Scripture and to Christ.

William James amusingly noted that one side effect of nitrous oxide inhalation is increased understanding of Hegel’s philosophy. As fun as that sounds, I have a better suggestion: read this splendid book by Alex Tseng before diving into the German idealist’s profoundly difficult writings. I learned many new and useful things from Tseng’s well-informed exposition and analysis. Reformed readers will especially appreciate the discussion of how Bavinck, Vos, and Van Til . . . [exposed] the flawed foundations of his system while co-opting his common-grace insights to demonstrate the virtues of a Reformed Christian worldview.

—James N. Anderson, Professor of Theology and Philosophy, Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte

Shao Kai Tseng (MDiv, Regent College; ThM, Princeton Theological Seminary; MSt, DPhil, University of Oxford) is research professor in the philosophy department at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. He is the author of Karl Barth’s Infralapsarian Theology as well as a number of articles published internationally.

Michel Foucault

  • Author: Christopher Watkin
  • Publisher: P&R
  • Publication Date: 2018
  • Pages: 184

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

Hugely influential, Michel Foucault’s work has not only impacted a diverse range of disciplines—from history and sociology to fine arts, feminism, and gay and lesbian studies—but has also profoundly shaped Western culture at a street level.

Yet until now there has been no overarching systematic approach to his work from a Reformed perspective—let alone one that is as fair and accessible as Watkin’s. After walking us through key elements of Foucault’s thought, Watkin both critiques and answers Foucault through the Bible’s teaching on history, power, and identity. His insights are necessary reading for anyone who wants to engage thoughtfully with the ideas of our culture.

If you’re not familiar with Michel Foucault, you should be. He is one of the most influential figures, if not the most influential figure, in contemporary Western culture. In this volume, Chris Watkin has accomplished what very few have even attempted. He walks us through the development of Foucault’s points of view with expert care and clarity. He also compares and contrasts these outlooks with the teachings of the New Testament in ways that challenge followers of Christ to look afresh at some of their most basic commitments. . . . I’ve been waiting for a volume like this for decades. It is essential for Christian scholars in every discipline.

——Richard L. Pratt Jr., President of Third Millennium Ministries

Christopher Watkin (MPhil, PhD, Jesus College, Cambridge) researches and writes on modern and contemporary French thought, atheism, and religion. He lectures in French studies at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.

Richard Dawkins

  • Author: Ransom Poythress
  • Publisher: P&R
  • Publication Date: 2018
  • Pages: 120

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

Richard Dawkins, a leader in the New Atheism movement and bestselling author, is one of the foremost proponents of a gene-centered approach to evolutionary science. Not only does he claim that materialism offers a satisfying purpose for life, but he has trenchantly criticized those who accept the existence of a supernatural creator.

Dawkins has had a great impact on perceptions of science’s scope and the viability of atheism, but his foundations are not as robust as they might seem. Ransom Poythress provides a sound, Reformed, biblical toolkit for defending the faith—looking at where Dawkins’s ideas on science cross philosophical concepts and critiquing them from a Christian perspective. Equipping readers with helpful information, this book gives advice and encouragement about how to engage others on these issues in an informed, loving way. The hope of the gospel is more than able to withstand the challenges presented by Dawkins and his thought.

The New Atheism is now an established feature of the intellectual landscape of our age. Richard Dawkins was one of the chief architects and intellectuals of the New Atheists. Ransom Poythress has written an accessible introduction to Dawkins’s life and thought and a compelling refutation of his arguments against Christianity. This is an enormously helpful resource.

—R. Albert Mohler Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Ransom Poythress (MA, Westminster Theological Seminary; PhD, Boston University) is an assistant professor of biology at Houghton College in western New York, with a research focus on the molecular mechanisms of smooth muscle contractile physiology. Poythress is a ruling elder in the Presbyterian Church of America. He and his wife, Lisbeth, live near the college campus where they minister to students.
