Overview
In this narrative poem, Tarquin, son of the king of Rome, lusts for the wife of Collatium—the chaste and beautiful Lucrece. Tarquin ultimately violates Lucrece. In her despair, she takes her own life. Her tragic death inspires a rebellion against the monarchy, leading to the establishment of the Roman Republic.
