This quarter’s Study Themes are: Welcome Home: Connecting and Engaging People in Your Church Evangelism—inviting others into the family of Christ—and discipleship—leading those people to grow in their walk with Christ and in participation with His body, the church—are foundational to what the church is all about. While most Christians would certainly agree with that truth, we’re not always at our best in being a welcoming presence that encourages growth and participation. It’s wise to periodically ask ourselves how we’re doing at welcoming others in the faith and family of God. This study looks at several principles from Scripture that move the church family to be a group that clearly and authentically communicates, “We’re glad you’re here.” This study complements the book Becoming a Welcoming Church by Dr. Thom S. Rainer. This study highlights teaching and examples from Scripture that support the practical suggestions in Becoming aWelcoming Church. How to Pray Twelve men walked closely with Jesus during His earthly ministry. Of all the things they saw Him do—teaching, preaching, performing miracles, and so forth—they only asked to learn one thing from Him: “Teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1). They saw the key role prayer played in His life and ministry. Prayer should be a key part of our lives as well. Jesus gave us a pattern to follow—a model prayer—that moves prayer from some rote, religious practice to a communion with our loving Father who works on our behalf. The Herschel Hobbs Commentary is designed for group leaders and group members who desire a more extensive exposition of the Bible passages in LifeWay’s Bible Studies for Life series. Based on the King James Version of the Bible, The Herschel Hobbs Commentary can be used with all major modern English translations.
