Overview

This quarter’s Study Theme is: “God’s Story.” Most people are familiar with at least a few Bible stories. They may not, however, see how the seemingly disparate parts of the Bible fit together. George Guthrie commented on why seeing how the whole fits together is significant: “When a person doesn’t get the story, all the little stories, and psalms, and parables have no point of reference by which we can understand them. Thus, we are going to have to teach people the story if we are going to reverse current trends in biblical illiteracy.”1 The Bible is made up of many stories, but they all fit together to tell one story—God’s story. This 13-week study will help learners understand the Bible’s story, their place in the story, and its implications for their lives. This study is important because it can lead adults not only to understand the biblical story’s overarching message but also help them to encounter its Author on a personal level. 1George Guthrie, Read the Bible for Life (Nashville: B&H Publishing Group, 2011), 12. The Herschel Hobbs Commentary is named in honor and memory of Dr. Herschel H. Hobbs, Southern Baptist statesman and theologian. Dr. Robert J. Dean is a retired curriculum specialist from LifeWay Christian Resources. Dr. Ronald K. Brown is a retired curriculum manager from LifeWay Christian Resources.
