For forty years, John Bowen has been a popular speaker, teacher, and preacher on university campuses, in churches and in classrooms, and at conferences across Canada. This book brings together forty of his best sermons, talks, and articles. You will be encouraged and you will be challenged. You will laugh and cry, think and pray--sometimes all at the same time. The topics are wildly various: “The Spiritual Quality of Craziness,” “Vacuum Cleaner Church,” “The Vocation of a Garbage Collector,” “Spirituality in my Sixties,” “What’s Wrong with Amazing Grace?” and “Strong and Weak” (a reflection on his bypass surgery in 2017). The audiences are as varied as the subjects: a conference of Christians in science, the visit of the Archbishop of Canterbury to Wycliffe College, a camp reunion, a diocesan conference, a church planting conference, his mother’s funeral, and (not least) his own parish church in Hamilton, Ontario. This is a book to dip into or to read from cover to cover. You will not be disappointed.
“People will never hear God’s word unless someone is sent to
tell them. For all who have been ‘sent’ here is a most delightful
book that is full of good things to say.”
—Cid Latty, Congregational Development Associate, Canadian Baptists
of Ontario and Quebec
“It is hard for me to be neutral about John Bowen, since listening
to him speak at university is what helped lead me to Jesus! John
writes like he speaks, with a turn of phrase or story that brings
you up short, surprises you, and then breaks something open inside
of you. With a keen sense of how to connect with those who are
spiritually searching, John’s book contains a rich vein of hard-won
wisdom and biblical insight to nourish the lifelong believer as
well.”
—Jenny Andison, Suffragan Bishop, Diocese of Toronto
“John Bowen has a voice and message that is both kind and bold,
which is exactly how he is as a human being as well. . . . What a
treasure it is to have a sampling of his writing and preaching in
one lovely collection.”
—Karen Stiller, author of The Minister’s Wife
“John Bowen brings street cred as an evangelist, mentor, and
teacher to this anthology of his writings. An exercise in what
evangelicals used to call ‘practical divinity,’ it is suffused from
the one side by his lifelong love of Scripture, and from the other
by the authenticity of someone in conversation with his Lord. As
such it rewards the reader at once as spiritual meditation,
theology, and personal remembrance. And then there is the Welsh wit
…”
—George Sumner, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas
