Digital Logos Edition
How can I minister to people in the hospital? How can I bring grace and hope to people in pain? What is a Christian view of death and dying? Of grief and loss? Will I see my baby in heaven? Does God promise always to heal in answer to our prayers? How do we respond in the face of suffering and seemingly unanswered prayer? How does God use life’s most difficult experiences? These are just some of the questions that Chaplain Rick Rood addresses in this book. Weaving together stories from his twenty-three years as a hospital chaplain and insights from Scripture, Rick provides help to those who want to minister effectively to hospital patients and their loved ones. As you read this book, you will walk with him through the various units of a hospital, and encounter situations typically experienced in each one. Rick’s prayer is that the Lord might use this book to help its readers become more compassionate and more effective agents of God’s grace in the lives of people in pain.

“In this fascinating read, Rick takes us with him on his
hospital visits to the sick and dying. He weaves heartrending
stories from years of chaplain ministry with practical Christian
theology of death, dying, grief, and loss. Rick shows God at work
in the most trying and emotional circumstances. You’ll love Rick,
too. On every page, you’ll encounter a true servant of God.”

“Rood is the ideal guide to lead the reader through the
halls of the hospital. Rood combines his extensive experience with
biblical insight and Christlike compassion as he ministers to
people and confronts unique situations and contemporary issues in
each department along the way. This work is insightful, practical,
and extremely helpful. I heartily recommend this book for anyone
seeking to minister effectively to those who are suffering.”
—Douglas M. Cecil, Adjunct Professor, Dallas Theological
Seminary
“This easily read journal of stories presents the needed balance of
grace and truth, head and heart, theory and practice in the
hospital setting. It provides practical tips for a ministry
covering a broad range of hospital departments and caregiving
situations. As a thirty-five-year veteran of hospital chaplaincy
ministry, I appreciate Rick’s emphasis on the need for a healthy
balance in caring for others and caring for self.”
