Overview

The modern church is in need of revival. But as author Paul Washer contends, “We cannot simply do what is right in our own eyes and then expect the Holy Spirit to come down and bless our labors.” Truth be told, the devil has little need to oppose the church’s prayer for revival unless God’s people are seeking to live lives and order congregations according to God’s Word. This book examines ten areas where churches have neglected clear biblical direction and need to prayerfully seek reformation.

[Review from goodreads, 9 January, 2025] It's hard to review this book because so much of it resonates with my heart for the church. Nevertheless, it is profoundly problematic. The arguments and views, which are largely right and desperately needed, are saturated in anti-intellectual, fundamentalistic, simplistic forms of thought that undermine his points. Or to put it another way, his epistemology is flatly unbiblical. So, for instance, when he pits psychology against Scripture, he hasn't given insight, only a false dichotomy. But he makes these sort of MacArthuristic cheap shots a lot. Which undermines his good intent and his obvious heart for the church. And it would be one thing if this were just wrong. But it's worse. It's wrong in a way that has helped steer the USA onto this mad, careening route it's currently taking where Christian Nationalism is viewed as a Christian doctrine and harnessed to empower a wanna-be dictator who this week is casually discussing annexing other countries as if that weren't the dangerous and perverted attitude of Putin... or Hitler. So it's a lot of really good stuff. Rooted in solid theology. Mixed with some really wrong thinking. And resulting in real harm.
