R. J. Knowling (1851–1919) was educated at Bundell’s School in Tiverton and Balliol College in Oxford. Ordained in 1878, Knowling was elected the curate of Wellington. He later went on to become the vice-principal of King’s College (London), as well as a professor of New Testament exegesis.
