Overview

Hebrews covers diverse topics—from Christ’s priesthood to the faith of prominent biblical figures. In this volume on Hebrews, George H. Guthrie brings the diversity of themes in Hebrews together, and shows how Hebrews is not only theologically significant, but also has something to say to the church today.

Top Highlights

“This is our author’s challenge: to encourage a group of discouraged believers drifting from real Christianity by bolstering their commitment to draw near to God and to endure in commitment to Christ.” (Page 22)

“Faith is confidence that results in action carried out in a variety of situations by ordinary people in response to the unseen God and his promises, with various earthly outcomes but always the ultimate outcome of God’s commendation and reward.” (Page 390)

“Perfection in Hebrews has to do with fully completing a course, making it to the end of God’s plan. That Jesus was made ‘perfect through suffering,’ therefore, connotes his full obedience to his mission of death on the cross and, perhaps, the adequacy of that act for bringing the children of God to glory.” (Page 108)

“A potential danger to this community seems to lie in the temptation to reject Christianity and return to Judaism proper” (Page 20)

“(2) True faith is action taken in response to the unseen God and his promises.” (Page 388)

This is the pulpit commentary for the twenty-first century.

—George K. Brushaber, president, Bethel College and Seminary

The NIV Application Commentary meets the urgent need for an exhaustive and authoritative commentary based on the New International Version. This series will soon be found in libraries and studies throughout the evangelical community.

—James Kennedy, senior minister, Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church

It is encouraging to find a commentary that is not only biblically trustworthy but also contemporary in its application. The NIV Application Commentary will prove to be a helpful tool in the pastor’s sermon preparation. I use it and recommend it.

Charles F. Stanley, pastor, First Baptist Church of Atlanta

George H. Guthrie (PhD, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) serves as Benjamin W. Perry Professor of Bible at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. As a specialist in New Testament and Greek, he is the author of numerous articles and four books.

Quick note: Dave St. Hilaire rated 83 Logos products in one day (7/29/2015), including all the NIVAC commentaries. 82 of his 83 ratings were 1 star. If this is ignored (the right call imho) the overall rating should be slightly higher.
