The updated version of Desiring God flows from John Piper's decades of experience as a Christian teacher and leader. In college, he struggled with the idea that doing good was ruined by deriving pleasure from those good actions. In seminary, his studies challenged that notion.
Piper's book invites the reader into this journey and presents a road map for understanding what Christian Hedonism is and how to live it out to the glory of God. He covers ten essential elements of the Christian life, helping the reader understand what happiness in God looks like in the context of these different aspects of life.
The tenth chapter is new to the latest edition of Desiring God. It addresses suffering. This may seem counterintuitive in a work on happiness, but all Christians will face suffering. Through ten detailed chapters, John Piper's Desiring God lays out the road map and argument for why and how a Christian should become a Christian Hedonist.
At the center of this argument is the appeal to make God the uppermost of the Christian's affections. All else in the book flows out of this basic understanding. To prove this, he strives to exposit Scripture and show five convictions to be true:
1. The longing to be happy is a universal human experience, and it is good, not sinful.
2. We should never try to deny or resist our longing to be happy, as though it were a bad impulse. Instead, we should seek to intensify this longing and nourish it with whatever will provide the deepest and most enduring satisfaction.
3. The deepest and most enduring happiness is found only in God. Not from God, but in God.
4. The happiness we find in God reaches its consummation when it is shared with others in the manifold ways of love.
5. To the extent that we try to abandon the pursuit of our own pleasure, we fail to honor God and love people. Or, to put it positively: The pursuit of pleasure is a necessary part of all worship and virtue.
