John of the Cross (San Juan de la Cruz) (June 24, 1542–December 14, 1591) born Juan de Yepes Alvarez, was a major figure of the Counter-Reformation, a Spanish mystic, Catholic saint, Carmelite friar, and priest He was born at Fontiveros, Old Castile. Saint John of the Cross was a reformer of the Carmelite Order and is considered, along with Saint Teresa of Ávila, as a founder of the Discalced Carmelites. He is also known for his writings.

    This is a classic reading of a spiritual masterpeice and a must-read to begin understanding mystical theology and the work of the Holy Spirit on the soul of the Christian. I have now heard several books read by Michael Kramer and he's an excellent reader. I listened to this book off of my Verbum app on my smartphone (I had it connected via bluetooth to a speaker so I could listen to it while I drive) and it works really well. The functionality of the app is somewhat limited (it doesn't remember where you left off... so you'll have to remember where you left off) but it's still a good deal.
