Overview

Alternately a prince of poetry and a flashpoint for partisanship, John Milton has been an enduring enigma of the Western canon. T.S. Eliot claimed that “of no other poet is it so difficult to consider the poetry simply as poetry, without our theological and political dispositions . . . making unlawful entry.” The Prose Works of John Milton lays out the philosophical and historical backdrop for the author of Paradise Lost.

Edited by American anthologist Rufus Wilmot Griswold, this collection of Milton’s political and theological tracts reveals Milton’s passionate personal convictions amid constant upheaval. Included are his significant treatises on the Reformation, ecclesiology, education, government, and divorce, as well as his celebrated defense of free speech, Areopagitica and his response to the Royalist Eikon Basilike—Eikonoklastes. Also a historian, John Milton wrote a history of Britain, included here. The anthology is rounded out with Milton’s official and familiar correspondence.

His politics have also made him one of the most enduringly controversial figures in British history. In addition to his poetry, he wrote extensively on political theory, theology, and history.
