Overview

Covering Psalms 42-106, this second volume on the book of Psalms portrays the realities of human life and the peace that is found in God alone. James Montgomery Boice explores the life of David—his pain, trials, joy, and spiritual aspirations.

This expositional commentary on one of the Bible's most popular books combines careful scholarship and clear communication in a verse-by-verse and section-by-section reading of the biblical text. Integrating thoughtful interpretation with contemporary insight for daily living, James Montgomery Boice explains the meaning of the text and relates the text's concerns to the church, Christianity, and the world in which we live.

Top Highlights

“5. Failure of God to act quickly on our behalf (42:9).” (Page 369)

“1. Forced absence from the temple of God, where God was worshiped (42:1–2)” (Page 367)

“So here is a first point of application: Is Jesus Christ your Lord and God? Is the God of the Bible your refuge in times of trouble? The psalm’s promises are for you only if he is.” (Page 748)

“2. He challenges himself to do what should be done.” (Page 370)

“The poet simply saw birds at the temple, and his point was that as the birds made their home at the temple and were secure there with no fear of enemies, so may the people of God make their home in God and find their security in him.” (Page 690)

No matter how familiar you may be with the Psalms, an incredible amount of information and insight can be gained through this commentary.

Christian Retailing

Of all that I've seen, this commentary probably provides the best direct help for preaching on the Psalms. Boice has written a well-crafted, easily understood commentary that provides good historical background and thoughtful suggestions for illustration.

The commentary is a good choice for everyone who likes pastoral or devotional commentaries. It gives an explanation of the Psalm and it's meaning for Israel in the past. Furthermore it offers very good applications for today. The application are what I like most. People who are looking for a technical commentary I would not recommend this one, because Boice dos not focus that much on grammatical structure and deep Hebrew word studies. But I have to say, that I only studied Psalm 78 with this commentary so far and does not read the whole commentary.
