Psalms: The Anatomy of the Soul
Jubilee,
The summer is upon us, and as usual, we find ourselves entering back into the Book of Psalms. Psalms play a pivotal role for the people of God for many reasons. The entire Psalter answers in 150 ways how then shall the people of God live, not only through many circumstances but also across the spectrum of emotions that occupy our soul. Before we pick up where we left off last summer, we will consider how the Psalms are like what John Calvin said: They are the “anatomy of all parts of the soul." We will also consider how Psalms 1 and 150 frame our sermons through Psalms 26-32 starting on July 16. In preparation, let me invite you to spend some time this week thinking about Psalm 42:5-6:
Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God. My soul is cast down within me; therefore, I remember you from the land of Jordan and of Hermon, from Mount Mizar.
We will see on Sunday, Lord willing, that the Psalms have a word for the emotions we feel in every season because the Psalms are for every season. Every Sunday, we come together with various stirrings in our souls. Pray that the Father would grant us much grace to admit, analyze and answer the emotions that swirl in and around us in light of the Psalter for this season in Jubilee’s life.
