What does it truly mean to “worship?” To find our answer, let’s go to the very first verse and the very first chapter in God’s Word. “In the beginning, God” (Genesis 1).
He is the Creator, and we are the created. He is the Alpha and the Omega. He is The Beginning and The End. He is great and we are small.
If we truly believe that God is the Beginning and we are long after, then: What we offer in worship is a response to God Himself. We respond to who He is and how he has revealed himself through Scripture and in life.
We aren’t worshiping a god that we are hoping will somehow, somewhere, sometime just “show up.” We serve a God Who is already here. The question is “do we” show up?
Worship begins with God and ends with God.
“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” - John 4.21-24
What we do in a service of worship is to glorify God in the name of Christ. May we always determine what worship is by God, and not what it should be by man.
