Is it possible to highlight text in a resource without creating a corresponding note?
e.g., There are times when I would like to highlight a key thought in a commentary without creating a note, as the quantity of notes is getting rathe large. :) Thanks
- Tom Young, Heather Brown, if I understand what you're asking, the answer is no. But let me explain, since "note" is used in at least two different senses. In the broader sense, it's the name of a tool that stores your highlights, your notes, and your responses in input fields in resources. Every time you create one of those three things, it will show up in the Notes tool. In that sense, then, no, you can't create a highlight without having it create an item in the Notes tool, since that's what stores all your highlights. In the narrower sense, a note is a kind of item stored in the Notes tool where you can capture your thoughts on a passage, topic, word, etc. You can add a note to highlighted text. But that's entirely optional. So, in that sense, yes, you can highlight without creating a note. But I think you're all asking in the broader sense. If you feel like your highlights are getting in your way as you're using the Notes tool, you can filter down and view only notes. I'd love to better understand what you don't like about the current system and how you wish it were different.
- Phil Gons (Logos) I came here looking for an answer to this same question. If I share the same feeling as those who posted, I would like to be able to look at a list of all the "notes" I created in a resource (not the highlights). I'm sure some also want a list of all their highlights too, but I'm not interested in that. I'm interested in the notes I used to interact. That said, your answer sounds like they can't be separated. But you did mention that you can "filter down and view only notes." Can you explain how to do that in the Notes tool?
- I cannot seem to find a filter to view only notes you created and not the highlight note. I have started having all my highlights go to one general folder so that my notebooks are not cluttered with all the highlight notes. I have also thought of created a notebook for my real notes called John Notes and then another folder called John Highlights. You can then go to the highlighting tool and right click on the "John" highlight palette you are using and at the bottom you will see "Notebooks" and then click on the right to see all your notebooks to choose from. There you will have the option to choose the John Highlights and all the Styles in that Palette will go to that folder. I ended up using one general Hightlights Folder because then I could choose the highights for all my palettes go into that folder by selecting the option mentioned above. My Highlights Folder has 12,000 notes LOL, a highlight for each highlight done. But all my other notebooks are not cluttered with each highlight I made. You cannot delete them or else your highlights will not show up. I hope that makes sense. If you find about the filter to view only notes you created, would you let me know?
