Overview

According to Their Kinds presents all vocabulary words that occur 100 times or more in the Hebrew Bible. Pairing pictures with biblical text and arranging the words in thematic categories makes these 470 words easy to memorize. The illustrations consist of the Picture Hebrew Flashcards 3rd edition, along with 50 extra words to round out the sections. This innovative resource assists users in three stages of learning, with English transliterations, simplified verb phrases, and sentences taken from biblical verses. An alphabetized Hebrew-English glossary and an English index make this a convenient reference tool you will want to come back to again and again.

Learning a language, modern or ancient, requires that we engage every component of our human language acquisition abilities. For too long ancient languages were taught more like math than languages. The focus was on paradigms and piecemeal analysis. Tools like Scheumanns' According to Their Kinds allow us to break free from the worn out grammar-translation models and engage students with stimuli rooted in research on how we acquire languages. This well-designed visual resource recognizes that memory utilizes sense-based cues to acquire vocabulary. I am sure that According to Their Kinds will serve teachers and students extremely well, resulting in deeper comprehension and longer retention of Biblical Hebrew.

Robert D. Hohnstedt, Professor of Biblical Hebrew and Ancient West Semitic Languages, University of Toronto; co-author, Beginning Biblical Hebrew: A Grammar and Illustrated Reader

According to Their Kinds is a splendid resource for moving Hebrew learners away from thinking about vocabulary as merely English glosses toward broader cognitive concepts. The integration of words, clauses, and images serves to reinforce better understanding of Hebrew language. Furthermore, the chapter groupings are ideal for conceptualizing the relationships between similar terms and ideas. This tool will help beginning, intermediate, and even advanced students find renewed enjoyment in studying Hebrew vocabulary.

Chip Hardy, Associate Professor of Old Testament & Semitic Languages, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary; author, Exegetical Gems from Biblical Hebrew

If we're not careful, with resources like Picture Hebrew and According to Their Kinds, learning Hebrew vocabulary might actually become intuitive and enjoyable. We, Biblical Hebrew teachers, won't stand for that! For those teachers of the language who, however, want their students to learn more and suffer less, I highly recommend this resource.

Jeremiah J. Davidson, Rector and Hebrew Professor, The Pastors School at First Baptist Church of Atibaia, Brazil

A fine example of being unable to see what you’re buying when Logos doesn’t show the images in the previews. The pictures are all hand drawn. They are all black and white. Mostly line drawings and some shadings... Some are good. Most are very average. None are particularly interesting or useful. The pictures are more suited for a childish audience… It’s not a children’s book and children are unlikely to sit and enjoy the pictures. However, the dictionary is not particularly refined as a dictionary and would not be a good resource as a dictionary. The book layout is also not particularly tidy. The pictures and the words are not clearly focussed or associated with each other. I would try describing them but they are really dissociated with the words. If it was a game matching the pictures to the words … most would have some difficulties. This book is more suited as a distraction than as a serious resource. i.e. It’s not useful for me as an adult… or for a younger age group. I don’t really know who this is good for. I bought this in a random sale … on a random day…. and won’t be requesting a refund because of the timing. However, I would have requested a refund if bought at full price on a different day. Mostly it just seems like the book was low effort… of the images and the dictionary and the editing. Overall it was a disappointing purchase.
