- Cherishing MotherhoodTo all the young mothers, “May your coffee be stronger than your toddler.” To the rest of us remember this fact, “Nothing is lost until your mother can’t find it.” This morning we celebrate the tradition of honoring the women who birthed, nurtured, educated, and shaped us to the person we have become today. History of Mother’s Day Anna Jarvis originated Mother’s Day when, on May 12, 1907, she held a memorial service at her late mother’s church in Grafton, West Virginia. Her mother had organized women’s groups to promote friendship and health. Within five years virtually every state was observing the day, and in 1914 U.S. President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday. Jarvis, who died in 1948, spent the last years of her life trying to abolish the holiday, as a protest against its commercialization. And in the spirit of mother’s day, Christian have the privilege of honoring every mother because we understand it is the Lord’s will for us to recognized God’s image bearers.sermons.faithlife.com
