Overview

The aim of An Introduction to the Literature of the Old Testament is to furnish an account, at once descriptive and historical, of the literature of the Old Testament. This includes an account of the contents and structure of the several books together with a description of their general character and purpose. This book is a powerful tool in the study, appreciation, and application of the message and material found in the Hebrew Scriptures.

If you're looking for a detailed study of the documentary hypothesis (JEDP), this is one of the best classic works on the subject. It helps you understand which passages are ascribed to which source and why. Although it can be tedious, I think it hits the rather narrow middle ground between works that superficially introduce the hypothesis and ones that assume the reader already knows everything about it. The edition I have of this in my library is an older Libronix version, and the hyperlinking could be better.
