Overview

MacArthur asserts that the church's growing infatuation with psychology, show-business techniques and extreme mysticism has left it tacitly acquiescing to the notion that Christ alone is simply not sufficient to meet people's real needs. In this landmark book he asserts that authentic Christ-centeredness is being abandoned for popular, market-driven concepts and methods guaranteed to swell numbers and fill coffers. With refreshing candor, MacArthur calls for a new generation of Christians with the courage to confront a disturbing mind-set that is taking the church by storm.

Top Highlights

“In many cases individual feelings and personal experience have replaced sound biblical interpretation. The question ‘What does the Bible mean to me?’ has become more important than ‘What does the Bible mean?’” (Pages 32–33)

“But pyschology cannot really study the soul; it is limited to studying human behavior.” (Page 30)

“Its underlying presuppositions are that the church can accomplish spiritual goals by fleshly means, and that the power of God’s Word alone is not sufficient to break through a sinner’s blindness and hardness of heart.” (Page 32)

“Focusing on our eternal inheritance is a key factor in maintaining a proper perspective on the sufficiency of Christ, especially in the middle of difficult circumstances.” (Page 43)

“Gnostics believed matter is evil and spirit is good.” (Page 28)

A great book that addresses some of the more extreme teachings about "Christian psychology", "health, wealth and prosperity gospel", casting out demons and more. Some teach Jesus is the means by which we get...fill in the blank. MacArthur clearly shows that Jesus is all we need.
